Earth Day Visitor, A Roadrunner on the Tomato Cage

I happened to look outside just in time to see a Roadrunner, perched on top of the tomato cage which stands about six feet tall.  I had to take the picture from about forty feet away, and my camera does not have great zoom ability, hopefully you can see him.

The wood squares measure about 24 x 24 so you can see he is a big bird!

We see him just about every day but this is the first time I have seen him on the frame.  We have lots of birds nesting in the trees, I hope he stays away from the babies.

  1. He is a big fellow ... and that tail is impressive! I think that beak could do some damage! Nice shots.

  2. A roadrunner? So, that's how a real roadrunner looks like. Before this, I only knew the Roadrunner in my fave cartoon series. Beep...beep!

  3. He was back again this morning. I wonder if it is nesting here. He visits my neighbors too. Maybe we will have baby roadrunners!

  4. That's funny... I just saw a roadrunner the other day in our backyard. That's great you got a photo. They are so fast, I just happened to look outside for a brief moment and saw one.

  7. Hi Carla, yes it looks like a big bird. I have never seen one, only in a picture. I did not know that they had such long tail feathers. It is nice when wildlife is visiting. Perhaps he likes your garden too and wants to start a family. I have sometimes birds in the garden which are not SO welcome, big native Pheasants which rob the little birds nests or wild Turkeys which scratch all the mulch away and make huge mounds into which they lay their eggs. Most of the time there are very tiny ones because as soon as they are born they are on their own and look for a place. They come and go.

  8. How Cool! :o) I really love birds and was thinking about joining some type of bird-watching group. This might have to wait until the kids get older and I have more time, but this is one of the interests that I'd like to pursue at some point.
